If you see a Defence Forces vehicle with an L-plate, don't worry

The Defence Forces says that all learner drivers are accompanied – and they don’t carry explosive material.

THE DEFENCE FORCES says that learner drivers do not carry hazardous materials.

The Forces were responding to a picture taken of a hazardous chemicals truck in Dublin that had an L-plate on the back.

However, a Defence Forces spokesperson said that this was merely a training run and that no hazardous materials were on board.

“The Transport School in the Defence Forces Training Centre in The Curragh, are currently running a course to qualify drivers in the driving, maintenance and administration of SAAB Scania 8 x 8 Drops Trucks. These are a logistical support truck for transporting large cargo both at home and on overseas deployments.

The Transportation of large cargo is pertinent to the smooth running of all branches in the Defence Forces domestically, but in particular to the Naval Service and Air Corps who need aeronautical fuels for their aircraft and vessels.

The spokesperson added that the learner was accompanied by a trainer the whole time.

“An instructor, who was a qualified ‘Hazchem’ (Hazardous Chemical) driver was present in the cab, while the student, who is already qualified to drive conventional trucks, was the student receiving tuition.

“There were no Hazardous Chemicals in the vehicle at the time.”
