Here's who took home the awards as Ireland's silver screen stars had their big night

There were both Irish and international winners.

A DATE FOR Mad Mary picked up two awards at the Iftas last night with two Irish Oscar nominees also picking up awards in their homeland.

The IFTA Film and Drama Awards were held in the Mansion House in Dublin and celebrated film and TV productions that are Irish or have Irish connections.

Irish comedy drama A Date for Mad Mary won the major award of the night when it scooped Best Film. Charleigh Bailey also won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.

Elsewhere, Ruth Negga won the award for Actress in a Lead Role while fellow Oscar nominee Consolata Boyle won the award for Costume Design for her work on Florence Foster Jenkins.

Colm Meaney won the award for Actor in a Lead Role for his portrayal of the recently deceased Martin McGuinness in The Journey.

On the TV side, the Irish-filmed History Channel show Vikings won the award for Best Drama. In doing so, it beat competition from Game of Thrones and The Fall among others.

In the TV acting awards, Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor award for his role in Peaky Blinders with Amy Huberman taking the Best Actress award for legal drama Striking Out.

IFTAS Mattress Mick was there to see the documentary about him win an award. Sam Boal Sam Boal

The George Morrison Award for best Feature Documentary was presented to Dave Clarke and Ciarán Deeney for their film Mattress Men.

The documentary tells the story of how Michael Flynn turned his struggling mattress business into a success by creating his eccentric ‘Mattress Mick’ persona.

The full list of winners and nominees is available on the IFTA website.

I’ll say it again because it was deleted earlier….

Shane Ross the TD that roared and shouted in the Dail about everything that was wrong with Ireland and it’s politics. He then became a minister and quickly fell in line with the rest of them.

Shane Ross is a messer. The other year the luas and buses were a disgrace in Dublin. Caused over 2 hour delays to many people. I decided to reach out to him. About 6 months later he tells me it’ll sort itself out….

Take this for what it is lads and ladies, a funny side point on an interview. Fair enough you don’t like his politics, not a huge fan of him myself, but I’m personally happy to see a politician embrace the funny side of the circus of politics. He’s poking fun at himself for being a flawed human doing flawed human things like the rest of us. Separate the job from the individual and lighten up, it’s an all Ireland final Sunday, enjoy it!

Remember Shane “If I was the Minister for Transport the first thing I would do is remove that toll from the M50 bridge, the people of Ireland have paid enough in road tax to well pay for it”. Once they get their asses under that ministerial desk all perception of who they evaporates.
