'I bought it for my own living room': 7 Ikea furniture pieces that designers love - for under €200

From comfy chairs to vibrant kids’ beds.

BY NOW, MOST of us know the appeal of Ikea: a great price point and great quality. But some products do that job so well that they start to pop up in every home you enter.

So which products from the Swedish retailer are stylish and stand-out enough that designers would happily choose them for their own homes – but still tick the budget-friendly and reliable boxes?

We asked a selection of Irish interior designers to pick the under-€200 pieces of Ikea furniture that they love right now – so that you can keep your budget intact while adding style to your space…

1. VIKHAMMER bedside table, €60: Denise O’Connor of Optimise Design

‘This clean-lined bedside table looks really high end and is only €60. Every time we use them in a bedroom, people ask where they are from.’

2. GLADOM tray table, €20: Denise O’Connor of Optimise Design

‘The GLADOM tray table is also fantastic. It has a really low price point and comes in a range of colours (dark green, black, blue and white). It is a gorgeous occasional piece.’

3. MINNEN kids’ bed, €105: Lisa Marconi, Dust Interior Design

‘Ikea is always great for kitting out children’s rooms and the MINNEN bed is a perfect example – available in white, yellow and black. It’s stylish and fun and won’t break the bank when they’re going to grow out of it in a few years.’

4. STRANDMON wing chair, €195: Carmel Malone of Tinsley Interiors

‘This fabric-upholstered chair allows a pop of colour in any room scheme. It’s comfortable, spacious in size and looks terrific. It’s available in dark grey, dark green and yellow among other colours.’

5. FINNVARD table, €79: Carmel Malone of Tinsley Interiors

‘Another favourite of mine at an incredible price. The FINNVARD table can be used as a dining table or a desk. It also has storage underneath in the form of two low shelves, and it looks totally retro.’

6. VITTSJO shelving unit, €80: Moya Farrell of Avenue Interior Design

‘I recently bought this unit for my own sitting room and I’m delighted with it. It’s sleek, minimal and a great space to store and display things in a sophisticated way. I like the simple use of glass and metal materials, its an uncomplicated piece which allows for it to be styled with frames, books, storage boxes and other ornaments.’

7. ULRIKSBERG armchair, €99: Moya Farrell of Avenue Interior Design

‘Rattan is having a real moment right now and IKEA is on the ball with this new and beautifully designed woven chair. I can imagine two of these in a sitting room side by side bringing a nicely balanced sense to the room; formality from a structured layout, contrasted with the earthy, organic rattan.’

8. IKEA ART EVENT 2019 rug, €180: Jackie Carton of Style My Room

‘This flatwoven handmade rug is a limited edition Ikea piece, designed by English artist Craig Green. I love the bold colours and striking graphic feel. I would hang it on the wall as a statement artwork piece, or just as easily as use it on the floor to ground a really strong interior scheme.’
