I'm back: Berlusconi's post-conviction about-face

After being convicted of tax fraud, Berlusconi says he feels compelled to stay in politics to ‘reform’ Italy’s justice system.

FORMER ITALIAN PREMIER Silvio Berlusconi, who announced this week he wouldn’t run in spring elections, says he now feels compelled to stay in politics to reform Italy’s justice system after being convicted of tax fraud.

Berlusconi’s comments came hours after a Milan court sentenced him to four years in prison and barred him from public office for five years. That term was later reduced to a single year because of an amnesty law dating from 2006.

However, the sentence isn’t definitive until all appeals are exhausted, and Berlusconi’s lawyers vowed to appeal.

Berlusconi, the owner of Serie A side AC Milan, denounced the judges as politicised, as he has done in his many legal wranglings with Italian magistrates. He told his private Mediaset television Saturday that he felt “obliged to stay in the game to reform the justice system so that what happened to me doesn’t happen to others.”

He didn’t say in what capacity he would work.

Is he not about 96 anyway ? 3 or 4 years to end of appeal process & that’s if all goes well for the government. I’d just tell him no more Botox or facelifts & that he can only have women within 5yrs of of his age at his bunga partaaays!

Three years? The Italian justice system is a lot slower than that. In fact, in a lot of cases, lawyers say openly that their defence strategy is just delaying proceedings until the statute of limitations is reached.
