Improvised explosive device made safe in Cork

Mayfield residents evacuated after device discovered close to vehicle overnight.

SOME CORK CITY residents were evacuated from their homes early this morning after an explosive device was discovered close to a vehicle in Mayfield.

The Defence Forces arrived on the scene at 2.20am to examine the device upon a request from the gardaí.

The device was made safe without the need for a controlled explosion and was handed over to the gardaí to assist them in their investigation of the incident.

The scene was declared safe at 4.30am.
