Japanese electronics company presents two prototype devices to launch its way into the increasingly-crowded tablet market.

SONY CORP HAS UNVEILED two prototype tablets which it aims to put on sale later this year.

The first design, the S1, looks similar to devices such as Apple’s iPad or the Samsung Galaxy tab, while the second (‘S2′) has a hinge which allows it to be closed over like a book.

Both Sony touchscreen tablets have Google’s Android 3.0 and are WiFi and WAN compatible.

The prototype S1 has a 9.4” display for viewing online content, while the S2 has two 5.5” displays which can be used either as one screen or for separate activities. Playstation games can be played on them, too.

Although “expectations are low that any company can present a credible challenge to Apple,” MF Global’s Jay Defibaugh told Reuters, Sony could succeed in meeting its target of becoming number two in the tablet market.

Sony said today it aims to launch the two devices globally this autumn.
