Just out of curiosity, how much of a cut do the likes of the people who collect for NGOs get? I’m referring to the collectors who stand infront of you on OConnell and Grafton street and say hi, do you wish to give us your bank details?!

I hear they get your first years subscriptions… After that if you continue to allow your account to be debited it goes to the charity

@dmc @andrew they get 75 % of your subscriptions this goes up to setting up the d/d and admin of the collecting company, the aid money there after goes straight to projects on the ground with about 2% been spent on admin costs I.e wages for staff equipment etc. i know an awful lot if people disagree with this way of fundraising but I’m currently studying development in the community and after doing collection programmes in class this model is cost effective as in there is monies there for aid in emergency cases also it is the most cost effective as in year 2 onwards 100% of monies from d/d go directly to charity

Nothing to what their CEOs get: http://www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/giving-to-charity-or-to-bloated-salaries-151611.html

So it takes €3k a WEEK of fundraising to pay Mr. Kilcullen’s salary? WTF?

@Dmc: 2016 update. Charities will have a fixed price agreement with the Fundraising agency that does the sign up, unless they work directly for the charity. It’s certainly not the first years sign up. It may be more than the first year if may be less than the first year…it depends on how much the donor agrees to DD each month. If it was €5 per month (€60 pa) it’ll be more…if it’s €20 pm it’ll be less… The fundraising agency currently working in Ireland (there were a few but I only know of one at the moment (2016)) has a fixed price, and rebates the charity if the donor cancels before the DD starts. They do not get any any percentage of the annualised gift (and no agency I’m aware of does) Any charges related to the direct debit for regular givers only applies if a DD bounces. And both the donor and charity will get penalised by the bank in question, there is no “Collecting Company” direct debits can only be conducted by licenced banks….not the agency who does the sign up. A number of charities employ face to face fundraisers directly…this typically greatly reduces the sign up cost, but it can be risky. On the whole it’s an effective method of fundraising. While some donors will drop off before the cost breaks even, in the long run it is extremely profitable the longer donors stay. After 5 years up to 75% of donors will still be giving…and often give additional gifts over and above their monthly gift. e.g. at Christmas and when emergencies happen.

Before Trocaire the nuns used to demand money “for the black babies” I remember feeling a bit worried if I did not have that penny.

The government donate €638 million to Africa every year. We are bankrupt and yet we donate this huge amount. We should now introduce a St Vincent de Paul box for Easter instead as surely charity begins athome

Our generous compliant government gave several million Euro to Uganda, Who, a few months later, spent $650,000,000 on supersonic fighter jets.
    - This is what’s going on in just one African country.
What kind of fools are we…??

Therese you are being disingenuous at a push.I am from the 70′s and if you were in the national school system then you came home with a Trocaire box.And as little as we had,we had more than the people Trocaire were trying to help had.I don’t know if our pence helped but it didn’t hurt.
