A HUGE CARGO ship carrying rocket parts rammed through a two-lane road bridge in Kentucky, US this week, causing drivers to slam on their brakes as the highway collapsed in front of them.

The Delta Mariner was conveying space components to Florida from Alabama on Thursday night when it hit the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge on the Tennessee River, Maritime Matters reports.

Two spans of the bridge collapsed, and can be seen draped over the bow of the five-storey-high vessel in striking images from the scene.

Driver Robert Parker was on the bridge at the time of the collision. “All of a sudden I see the road’s gone and I hit the brakes,” he told the AP. “It got close.”

Parker said he stopped his pickup within five feet of the missing section. He said he didn’t feel the vessel strike the bridge but “felt the bridge was kind of weak.”
