Impassioned protests against pension reforms enter the seventh day.

OVER ONE MILLION people took the the streets across France yesterday in a mass demonstration against Nicolas Sarkozy’s proposed pension reforms – and the protests continue today.

Workers across the country threw down their tools , refusing to accept the proposal to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

Today the rolling strike continues, prolonging transport and school disruption and adding to the growing fuel crisis. The ongoing blockade of oil refineries has led to 4,000 petrol stations across the country saying they were “awaiting supplies”.

The Guardian reports that Sarkozy was forced to issue an appeal for “calm” yesterday as protests turned destructive and violent in some areas – cars were burned, shop windows smashed and at least two photojournalists assaulted in Nanterre, west of Paris, and Lyon.
