Inflation rose to 2.6 per cent in September

The annual rate of inflation rose from 2.2 per cent in August to 2.6 per cent last month, the CSO has said today.

THE ANNUAL RATE of inflation rose to 2.6 per cent in September, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The increase is up from 2.2 per cent in August with consumer prices, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, up 0.3 per cent in the month and added to the decrease of 0.1 per cent recorded in September 2010.

The CSO said that the main reasons for the increase were the rising costs of clothing and footwear due to a further recovery in prices following the traditional summer sales. Prices were up 5.4 per cent.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose mainly due to higher mortgage interest repayments which rose by 3.1 per cent.

Meanwhile, the cost of transport fell by 0.7 per cent mainly due to a decrease in airfares which dropped by 16.9 per cent.
