Woman in North critically injured after being hit by scrambler motorcycle

Two men aged 15 and 17 were arrested in connection with the incident and remain in custody.

POLICE IN BELFAST have appealed for witnesses after a woman was critically injured after being struck by a scrambler motorcycle.

The incident happened in Colin Glen Forest Park in west Belfast yesterday evening at around 6pm.

The woman was walking her dog in the park at the time.

She remains in critical condition and two males, aged 15 and 17, have been detained in connection with the incident.

Superintendent Melanie Jones of the PSNI has appealed for anyone who may have been in the park and seen off-road bikes being used around that time to come forward.

“Some scramblers do not comply with Vehicle Safety Standards and are therefore restricted to ‘off-road’ use only because they do not comply with the necessary legislation for use on a public road or in a public place,” she said.

This does not mean they can be driven anywhere ‘off-road’.

In the North, these bikes can only be used on private land where permission has been given, and should not be used on pavements, roads, public property or parks.

Parents were also urged to be aware of any vehicles being used by their children.

The vehicles have previously caused issues south of the border.

Earlier this year gardaí in Dublin told TheJournal.ie there had been problems with the bikes in areas around the city.
