Investigation launched after man arrested in Co Donegal later found dead in Garda Station cell

The man was in Garda custody at a Station in Donegal when he was discovered unresponsive in a cell.

AN INVESTIGATION HAS been launched after a man was found dead in the cell of a Co Donegal Garda Station.

The man, who was in his 30s, had been arrested earlier in the day yesterday and taken to Buncrana Garda Station.

The man was later discovered unresponsive in the cell and urgent assistance was called for.

However, despite receiving medical attention, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office confirmed the death of the man.

The spokesperson said “On the evening of 27 Thursday June 2024, a man in his 30s who was in Garda custody at a Garda Station in Donegal was discovered unresponsive in a cell and urgent assistance was requested.

“Despite resuscitative attempts by medical personnel and first responders who attended, this male was later pronounced deceased.

“As per Garda Policy this matter has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.”
