Investigations continue after child struck by train near Tipperary

A young girl was struck by a train on the Waterford line outside Limerick Junction.

INVESTIGATIONS INTO an incident yesterday evening in which a young girl was struck by a train near Tipperary town are continuing.

The Railway Accident Investigation Unit, the gardaí and Irish Rail are all investigating the circumstances of the incident which occurred at around 7.30pm outside Limerick Junction on the Waterford line.

A team from the Railway Accident Investigation Unit attended the scene last night and is carrying out a preliminary examination into the incident.

It is understood the girl, 9, lives in a house near the railway tracks.

The child is still in intensive care, according to RTÉ Radio One news, however further details of her condition have not been disclosed.

No injuries were reported among those on board the train at the time.

Irish Rail says it provides counselling for any drivers who are involved in distressing situations. A spokesperson for the rail company said their thoughts are with the family of the girl involved.
