iPhone 5 set to be launched next Wednesday

Apple has announced a media event for 12 September

THE LATEST VERSION of Apple’s ubiquitous iPhone is set to be launched next Wednesday after the company announced an event in California this evening.

The Cupertino-based company has invited the media to an event in San Francisco on 12 September at 10am local time (6pm Irish time)

According to the Wall Street Journal the email invitation contains a number of subtle hints reading: “It’s almost here” on a white background with a big number 12 that casts a shadow of the number five.

This more than likely means that the new smartphone will be called the iPhone 5 as it follows up the most recent device, the iPhone 4s, which was released last year.

Though Apple strives to keep details of any new products under wraps until they are launched, various leaks and rumours in recent months have indicated that the latest device will have a larger screen, be thinner, contain a new kind of sim card and have a smaller dock connector.
