Iran says members of bomb group arrested

Yesterday’s blast struck as military parade marked anniversary of 1980s war with Iraq.

IRANIAN STATE MEDIA has reported that members of a group behind the bomb attack which killed 12 people yesterday have been arrested.

A device exploded in Mahabad, north-western Iran, as a large crowd watched a military parade marking the anniversary of the Iran-Iraq War.

Around 80 people were injured in the attack, Reuters reports.

Al Jazeera reports that Iran’s intelligence minister was quoted on state TV as saying members of the group responsible had been arrested and would “hopefully” be punished.

No details of the people arrested have been released. Yesterday, AP reported that a provincial official blamed Kurdish separatists for the attack. The official suggested the involvement of foreign governments, saying: “This move has a foreign root. The US and its allies are present in the region.”

The government has announced three days of mourning in Mahabad.
