Some bad news for the minister this morning... Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland

Ireland is officially back in recession

The economy shrank in the first quarter of 2013. And in the last quarter of 2012. And in the third quarter of 2012…

IRELAND HAS OFFICIALLY re-entered recession, according to official data published this morning.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show Irish economic output shrinking by 0.6 per cent in the first quarter of the year.

When measured as Gross National Product, however, the figures are slightly more positive – showing growth of 2.9 per cent when only domestic firms are included.

However, the CSO’s data also revises its earlier figures for previous growth in the Irish economy – showing the economy fared worse than expected in the second half of 2012.

Gross Domestic Product shrank by 1.0 per cent in the third quarter of 2012 – worse than the -0.4pc figure given three months ago, and significantly worse than the growth of 0.2 per cent in the original figures compiled last winter.

Similarly, the last figures – which said the economy had neither grown nor shrank in the final quarter of 2012 – have been revised downward. The CSO now believes the economy shrank by 0.2 per cent.

The figures mean GDP has fallen for three successive quarters. Generally accepted definitions dictate that an area is in recession if its GDP shrinks for two quarters in succession.

The GDP figures showed that output in public administration and defence fell by 1.5 per cent in the first quarter – likely reflecting the continued downsizing of the public sector.

However, agriculture, forestry and fishing output rose by 4.8 per cent, while industrial output (including building and construction) rose by 2.1 per cent.

If you want to spend endlessly into oblivion and destroy the middle class, keep running budget deficits and inflate the currency away.

Austerity is getting a bad rap but it is the medicine to cure the ails of misallocated resources, i.e. too much government.

The problem is that the austerity is what is being taken immorally from the wrong places.

We need to get it out of our heads that recessions are a bad thing.

I would have to agree. I am a youth worker and in its simplest form conflict (austerity) is important for the group (the country) to build and develop. It is the most difficult part of the group process, but when it is over and you can preform and create something that is worthwhile. There is a change coming but all people need to be involved in that change. If people get their point across then Ireland wont be what people want Ireland to be in the future. This is a time of great change, but what type of change is up to us all.

This is not bad news for Noonan. It’s the inevitable result of the neo liberal economic vandalism he is inflicting on Ireland. The poisonous limerick toad has been extremely effective at protecting the interests of those he serves, the european political and financial elite. Really, as far as I can see the Sinn Fein supporters all seem to be either bowl haircuts with the backside hanging out of their tracksuits or the florid faced workshy mouthpiece know nothings. All the Sinn Fein “Clinics” appear to be in semi bombed out housing estate shopping centres with the exception of one I saw in Castleknock some time ago. Each “clinic” I have seen always has two or three hard chaws semi suited standing to attention in them with a brick wall for a puss. Hardly an advertisement for prosperity Garda Pat, unless it is prosperity of the baseball bat variety.

Austerity that was primarily induced in Fianna Fáil guaranteeing Anglo-Irish bank, did you even listen to the tapes? But instead of addressing the situation at hand you just go on a rant about Sinn Féin and working class people who wear tracksuits who are “know nothings”.

SF has constantly been accused of coming up with barmy economic proposals. Fg and lab think no one notices that they implement them when they think no one is looking. The latest confirmation that Pearce Doherty knows exactly what he is talking about- raiding the pension fund for a stimulus package, as far as I remember, he has been arguing for this the past 4 years. Where are all the fg supporters now? Havn’t they been smugly spewing muck about the economy stabilising and growing for the last few years? Normally vindication should feel good, but in this case it is horrible, when will they start listening to sense?

I may also add that I am a Trinity College Scholar, which obviously categorises me as a ‘know-nothing’ by your high standards. Regardless, I am working hard in my studies to help be a part of a future Ireland, but unless we really see a change in government attitudes, or else replace the current lot with people who are actually willing to put the national as opposed to individual benefit to the forefront, then the future looks very bleak.

Regardless which party people support, as long as they do what they can for our country, I really don’t care; be they people like Anthony Burrowes above, be they doctors, economists or even the dreaded ‘track-suited’ individuals you seemingly despise, they can all do a part for our country.

Yea, but we still need people to buy them on the other end, and the cost of doing business here is so high, you’s need to be selling large volumes to make a profit. No one easy answer really, we need to get money into the economy and get people back to work, if you don’t have that, then anything else you do will not get us going again

Out of recessions, lol, what a joke. Did anybody even buy that one? Once again the tail wagging the dog, or as Mr Orwell might say, classic doublespeak. I left the country 3 years ago because it was f**ked. I return on a regular basis every few months, and each time I return it gets worse. Outside of Dublin, most towns and cities are like ghost towns with vacant shops and very few people. My friends tell me it becomes more difficult all the time to make ends meet because of the double whammy of taxes and price increases while for those who still have jobs, wages remain static which spending power decreases. The government (and by that I mean all of the elite) and their media cheerleaders manipulate by using diversion tactics such as Ming, Mick Wallace, Abortion, immigration, anything really, just the get the sheeple’s attention somewhere else, and this technique usually works. We are not out of recession, were not out of recession and will never be out of recession as long as the con job known as the bank bailout and the absurd idea that you can cut yourself out of a recession remain the order of the day. And remain it will, because it is not the elite and their charming spawn that are effected by this, but the little people, ie, the taxpayer. Time to wake up people.

The “technical” detail of “The economy shrank in the first quarter of 2013. And in the last quarter of 2012. And in the third quarter of 2012…” does not mean squat to the average Joe taxpayer that works day in day out for this farce of a banking system, it’s puppet politicians & this country, as it has no impact on day to day life.

Considering bankers are good at pulling things outta their arse, that’s probably where this analysis of the economy came from too, stick it back where it came from Nonan!

Great reporting this from the Journal. Headline states we have ‘officially entered into recession’.. While the article states

“The economy shrank in the first quarter of 2013. And in the last quarter of 2012. And in the third quarter of 2012…”
“The figures mean GDP has fallen for three successive quarters. Generally accepted definitions dictate that an area is in recession if its GDP shrinks for two quarters in succession.”

So basically we officially entered into recession at the end of 2012..

Have we become a nation of pushovers that we allow anyone bully us to conform, at what point do we say enough is enough – when kids are going hungry, when grown adults have move back with Mammy and Daddy, when you go knocking on the door of the social welfare and get treated like the least important existence on the planet. Irish people are not lazy – we prefer to be working, but we need have jobs to go to and jobs that pay you for doing the work not where it costs you money to do it, we all want out of this depression recession and corrupt politicians only their to line their own pockets is not the solution

I know! As we’re entering recession again, why don’t we take another €300 million from the economy this year by cutting public servants’ wages! And in a full year, we can take a whole €1 billion!

That’s sure to create growth, as all of those public servants… um… take their savings and… er…

Look, Mark Fielding of ISME said we need more spending and consumer confidence to lift the economy – and he *also* said we need to cur public sector wages. He obviously knows what he’s talking about and clearly isn’t trying have his cake and eat it…

Do you really think anything that would come out of Europe would be in the interest of the Irish state? That is the last thing we need. By handing over an inquiry to Europe we are effectively acknowledging that we have surrendered our sovereignty once and for all.

This country needs a revolution from within. Despite what Irish people tell themselves there are plenty of people capable of running this country in the interest of the people. They are just marginalized and completely disillusioned with the political system.
