Last night's Ireland game was watched by 1.1 million people at its peak

Over 51% of people watching TV at the time were tuned into the match.

IF YOU WERE watching TV last night, there’s almost a 50/50 chance you were tuned into watch Ireland beat Wales in Cardiff.

RTÉ says that an average audience of 861,200 tuned into RTÉ2’s live coverage of the Republic of Ireland’s win over Wales in yesterday’s final Group D World Cup qualifier.

In total, 51.28% of all those watching TV at the time were tuned into RTÉ2.

The TV audience peaked at over 1.1 million people as the game went into the final minute of injury-time at 9.39pm.

There were plenty of people watching abroad too – last night’s game saw the highest volume of live streams for any event this year to date on the RTÉ Player. Total live streams reached 123,254, surpassing the previous high of 107,451 set by the All-Ireland football final.

Last night’s match was a nailbiter to the end, with James McClean’s goal securing Ireland a place in the play-off next month.
