Ireland's oldest woman passes away at the age of 108

Nora Canavan was born in 1908.

IRELAND’S OLDEST WOMAN has passed away at the age of 108.

North Clare woman Nora Canavan – who was also Ireland’s oldest person – took over the mantle earlier this year after the death of 109-year-old Molly Madden.

According to Clare FM, Canavan had been living in the area of Doolin. She had enjoyed crochet and gardening and continued to knit up until her last year.

Speaking to the Clare Oral History and Folk group in 2012, Canavan recalled her husband Stephen who she had met at a neighbour’s house.

She also recalled her amazement at the first time that running water was installed in her home.

Writing on Facebook today, her parish priest Fr Conor Cunningham said that “Nora was full of gratitude to God for her many years of faith, family and friendship.”

Her funeral is set to take place this Friday, 22 July in Holy Rosary Church, Doolin at 12pm.
