Irish Rail is cracking down on bikes aboard peak-time trains

From now on, you won’t be allowed bring a bike on board at rush hour unless you book one of the (very) limited bike spaces.

IRISH RAIL IS cracking down on passengers with bicycles aboard rush hour Heuston trains, from this morning.

From now on, you won’t be allowed bring a bike on board at rush hour unless you book one of the limited bike spaces in advance.

The new restrictions will be rolled out to other services, including the DART in Dublin, in the future, the company has said.

“They were taking up capacity and blocking carriageways and blocking movement within the carriages,” Irish Rail’s Barry Kenny told Morning Ireland.

Other passengers complained about bikes blocking doorways, and the company has taken action as a result, Kenny said.

“We have dedicated bicycle spaces on Intercity trains,” he added.

“When they are reserved in advance online they’re now free of charge as opposed to a €6 fee which used to apply.”

However, as Irish Rail explains online, those reserved bicycle spaces are restricted to two per train.

The trains affected by the change today include:

  • Services arriving into Heuston station from 07.00 to 09.30
  • Services departing Heuston station from 16.00 to 19.00

Fold-up bikes are still permitted at all times.

Details on how to book a bike space are available on the Irish Rail website.

What do you make of the changes?
