Athlone-Westport train running again after earlier cow strike

The animal was hit by a train travelling between Athlone and Westport.

Update 2pm

A TRAIN TRAVELLING from Athlone to Westport has been damaged after it struck a cow which had wandered onto the tracks.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail has told TheJournal.ie that train engineers were called on site after the animal was struck. The spokesperson believes the cow was killed on impact.

There were around 20 people on board the train at the time, and alternative transport was arranged for those who required it. The 10.15 Athlone to Wesport service is now moving, although it is running 80 minutes late.

The spokesperson said that incidents like this happen from time to time.
