9 perfect Irish reunions we’d love to see happening

First up, bringing Robbie Brady and the Irish fans back to Lille for one more Euros goal.

NOTHING BEATS A good reunion, whether it’s a catch-up with an old friend over a pint, or a comeback tour from your favourite band.

Here in Ireland, there are plenty of things, people and cultural icons we’d love to see reunited. In most cases, all it would take would be a word with the powers that be – or failing that, the ability to turn back time.

Read on for nine altogether Irish reunions we’d love to see happening, if we could play God for a day…

1. A one-off return of The Clinic with Saoirse Ronan

Long before Saoirse Ronan was cruising the Oscar circuit, she was an RTÉ stalwart. In 2003, she played Rhiannon Geraghty for four episodes of the Irish medical drama The Clinic. The following year, she turned up on Proof, another RTÉ drama. After 15 years, we reckon it’s time to bring The Clinic back, with Saoirse as the lead.

2. A chance for Ray, Dustin and Socky to grace our screens again

For a sweet window in the mid-Nineties, The Den was presented by the Holy Trinity of Irish children’s TV: Ray D’Arcy, Dustin The Turkey and Socky The Sock Monster. Ray’s been back on screens since 2015, so it’s high time the trio were reunited. And maybe Ted too?

3. A return of the Wibbly Wobbly Wonder for summer 2018

It’s been close to twenty years since the Wibbly Wobbly Wonder was taken off the market in all its strawberry, banana and chocolate-coated lemon jelly glory. The ice cream returned briefly in 2006 for HB’s 80th anniversary, but we’d prefer a permanent arrangement.

4. Another epic Teresa Mannion weather report

RTÉ reporter Teresa Mannion went viral overnight back in 2016, as she frantically urged her fellow countrymen and women to stay indoors during Storm Desmond. We were hoping for a re-do during Storm Emma a couple of weeks back, but if anything, Teresa was the picture of calm.

5. A 20th anniversary reboot of The Morbegs

While schoolfriends with multichannel were glued to Blue Peter and Art Attack, anyone with terrestrial channels had to make do with The Morbegs and their Growing Tree, airing every weekday afternoon on Network 2. The show ended in 1998, but the theme tune remains firmly embedded in the brains of most Irish adults. Bring it back, we say.

6. A Glenroe comeback episode

Last month, former on-screen mum and daughter Bláthnaid Treacy and Mary McEvoy had an accidental Glenroe reunion backstage at RTÉ. So why not get the whole cast back together for a one-off episode? Yes, the writers would have a big task explaining Biddy’s return from the dead, but aside from that it’s a no-brainer.

7. Just one more series of Head To Toe

Arguably the Instagram of its day, Head To Toe was a weekly fashion and lifestyle show on RTÉ, covering clothes, shopping, and some incredibly cringeworthy vox pops with stylishly dressed Irish people. The nation would surely lap up another series, especially if Marty Whelan came back on board.

8. A return to the glory of Robbie Brady’s Euro 2016 goal

After last year’s World Cup qualifier attempt, which saw Ireland lose 5-1 to Denmark, Ireland’s reputation as a tournament-ready team is waning. To reignite the flame, let’s gather the fans who travelled to Lille for the Euros in 2016, and give Robbie Brady a chance to score a stormer against Italy again.

9. And while we’re at it, an Italia 90 re-do

Has Irish soccer ever been as exciting as the summer of 1990? Sure, the Jackie’s Army squad have long retired, but if we could turn back time to one World Cup match, it’d have to be Ireland V Romania, June 25, 1990. Sigh.
