Irish Times biggest winner at national newspaper awards

The paper of record wins four gongs at the National Newspapers of Ireland’s inaugural journalism awards.

THE IRISH TIMES has won four awards, the most of any title, at the National Newspapers of Ireland’s inaugural Journalism Awards for 2011.

The paper of record saw its finance correspondent Simon Carswell named National Journalist of the Year, while Kathy Sheridan won the title of features writer and Miriam Lord was named best political journalist.

The paper’s recently retired editor, Geraldine Kennedy, was given a special award for Outstanding Contribution to the Newspaper Industry.

The Irish Independent and Irish Examiner took two awards each – with the Independent’s Martina Devlin winning Columnist of the Year, while political correspondent Fiach Kelly was named Young Journalist of the Year, an award for writers aged 26 or younger.

For the Examiner, Kieran Shannon – formerly of the Sunday Tribune – was named Sports Journalist of the year, while the paper also took the nod for Best Design.

The Irish Daily Mail’s Senan Molony took the award for Scoop of the Year, for his story on the Michael Healy-Rae ‘Celebrities go Wild’ voting scandal, while the Irish Sun’s Jennifer O’Brien won Showbiz Story of the Year for covering the attack on the home of Boyzone’s Mikey Graham.

The Sunday Times’ pair of Tom Lyons and Brian Carey shared the Business & Economics Journalist of the Year prize.

The Evening Herald’s Patrick Freyne – also formerly of the Sunday Tribune – was named Critic of the Year, while the prize for regional journalist of the year went to the Wexford Echo’s Colette Browne.

Did anybody mention Sam Smyth at these National Newspaper Awards? Were there any demonstrations of solidarity? Did anybody ask Minister Pat Rabbitte what he would do to guarantee freedom of speech in this country?

No, probably because they didn’t want to look like idiots jumping to conclusions like you seem to have.

The IT is Ireland’s only half decent newspaper, but at the same time it’s just a shade better than the Westmeath Examiner. The amount of world news in it is shockingly small, compared to Le Monde, Der Frankfurter Allgemeine, the Guardian or the Daily Torygraph.

Essentially this is a bunch of mediocre newspapers rewarding other mediocre newspapers for their perceived lack of mediocrity.

To be fair, since TheJournal recycles so many Irish Times stories, it can feel as though it kinda won too!

If you relied on the Irish Times to know what’s going on in the World you’d be very ignorant indeed. You wouldn’t learn much more watching RTE. The IT in particular has correspondents in key areas who wear their biases on their sleeves and are not fit for purpose.

You’re all very hard on each other. Why can’t we all love each other and accept our fellow human beings with all their weaknesses and frailties and in so doing we too will be accepted for what we are? Life is too short to be unkind. We pass this way but once.

I can feel the begrudgery on here. The Irish Times is an excellent paper – the style of news writing is the most objective in this country. Credit where it is due.
