Water supply to return as Irish Water repairs burst watermain affecting south Dublin

Works are underway at a watermain in Stillorgan, which services several parts of the city.

UPDATED: 17.33

REPAIR WORKS ARE now complete on a burst watermain affecting homes and businesses in south Dublin and the city centre, according to Irish Water.

Normal water supply should begin to return to customers impacted this evening.

The damage occurred at a large watermain in the Stillorgan area, which supplies a number of areas across the capital.

Areas affected include Leeson Street, Ballsbridge, Stillorgan, Blackrock, Donnybrook, Merrion, Booterstown and surrounding areas in Dublin City.

Irish Water said customers in Clonskeagh, Ranelagh, Rathmines, Terenure, Rathfarnham and Windy Arbour may also be experiencing lower than normal pressure as a result of the repair works.

The company advised that there may be some temporary discolouration of water and occasionally issues such as internal airlocks may arise following the outage, explaining what customers should expect as their supply resumes.

Dedicated water service crews worked with Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown and Dublin City Councils to restore the water “as quickly as possible to impacted customers”, a spokesperson added.

Speaking about the burst, Joe O’Reilly of Irish Water, said the repair operation was complex, parlty owing to the location of the burst watermain and a 200-year-old culverted stream.

“Dedicated crews successfully carried out the repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible, working through the night and again today to minimise disruption to the area and restore water for all customers,” he said.

“We would like to acknowledge and thank the Civil Defence, Fire Brigade and An Garda Síochána for their assistance with completing the repair.

“We understand the inconvenience unplanned outages can have on customers and we appreciate your patience as we worked to return the water supply to homes and businesses as quickly and as safely as possible.”
