Irish woman dies after being swept into sea in Sardinia

It’s the second death involving an Irish tourist to happen on the Italian island in less than a week.

AN IRISH WOMAN has died after being swept into the sea on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Local media reported that the incident happened yesterday evening in the seaside village of Portu Maga.

L’Unione Sarda, the oldest newspaper in Sardinia, reported that a 62-year-old Irish woman was swept into the sea after waves crashed into the cliffs of Portu Maga.

The daily newspaper added that a search and rescue operation was mounted immediately.

Her body was later recovered from the sea by a specialist diver.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

It’s the second tragedy to befall an Irish person in Sardinia in less than a week.

On Sunday, the body of an Irish hiker who had been reported missing since last Friday was recovered.

It is understood that the man was hiking in the municipality of Iglesias, on the trail of the Cammino Minerio di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica.

He had been on a walking trip with his family and went for a hike on his own at around 8am on Friday.
