Irishman working in Australia killed in gas-bottle explosion

The young man, aged in his 20s, had been working as a farmhand near Perth.

A YOUNG IRISHMAN has been killed following an explosion near Perth, Australia.

It is understood that the man, aged in his 20s, was working as a farmhand and staying at the Mackie Hay Plant in New Norcia, about 140 km north of Perth.

The Irish Independent has reported that the man is from Co Roscommon.

Perth Now reports that the man was in the communal kitchenette when the explosion occurred at about 4.30am Saturday morning, local time. It is believed that a gas bottle exploded in the kitchen, which caused a fire and a roof collapse.

About 20 other workers who were asleep in the hostel at the time were evacuated, thewest.com.au reports.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the young man’s death this morning, and says it is providing consular assistance to his family.
