'It's a corner of tranquility in a busy home': Artist Isobel shares her calming lounge area

Isobel’s space is filled with carefully chosen artwork from a variety of sources.

Each week, we ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

This week, Isobel Henihan (@ourhomeindublin) chatted us through her favourite spot: her cosy living area. Isobel lives in a self-build property in south Dublin with her husband and three children.

What do you love about this part of your home?

I love that it’s a corner of tranquility in a busy home. I like to pour myself a herbal tea first thing in the morning before everyone wakes up and take a moment here to either read, prepare my mind for the day ahead, or just look out at the garden.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

This house is like a home art gallery. I’m a painter and my work is constantly moving, so we get to hang it on our walls for only a short while before it is taken to the framer and then on to The Doorway Gallery in Dublin 2 from where it goes on to find its forever home. The large portraits visible behind the couch are some portraits I drew of our kids, so these are the rare works that are permanent fixtures here.

Be honest: How much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

These cushions need picking up and rearranging at least three times a day. Our kids can’t look at the couch without a throw and some cushions somehow ending up on the floor!

What was your inspiration when you were putting this room together?

I wanted to create a tranquil and calm corner in the open-plan living/kitchen space, and used plants, natural textiles and textures to provide layers which help differentiate from the more industrial style of the kitchen space.

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

Since taking this photo, I have painted this wall a restful taupe colour. It further reaffirms the zoning of this corner and adds to its tranquility.
