J1 applications for next summer are now open

All students seeking to travel to work in the US next summer will need to provide evidence of a pre-arranged job.

IN COLLEGE AND thinking of going abroad next summer? Applications to go live and work in the US next summer are now open.

USIT has said that the J1 visa programme remains a long-standing rite of passage for many Irish college students.

Applications can made online at j1online.ie.

All students seeking to travel to work in the US next summer will need to provide evidence of a pre-arranged job across the pond as part of their J1 applications, a measure which was brought in last year.

USIT said that it offers basic and premium packages, with the latter package helping students to arrange jobs over in the US.

Despite intense lobbying from the Irish government in recent years, the US has retained the system of pre-arranged employment as a requirement for J1 visas.

A statement from the US embassy added that, since its inception over 50 years ago, 150,000 students have embarked to the US on a J1 programme from Ireland.

There was good news on the J-1 front last December, with the 12-month visa extended for another three years, after concerns were raised following previous comments made by President Donald Trump.

Reacting to the news, then-Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan said: “The J1 programme is an important and valued part of Ireland’s bilateral relations with the United States.”
