CORK COMMUTERS WERE left sitting in a traffic jam this morning after a tractor towing a stack of three trucks caused the closure of one lane of the Jack Lynch tunnel.
The tractor triggered an over-height alert from the tunnel’s newly-installed sensors when it trundled into the southbound bore of the key traffic artery at around 7:45am this morning.
Gardaí were called to the scene and one lane of the tunnel was closed for a period of time, causing traffic congestion to mount.
The tunnel’s height detection system was upgraded last month and when activated it stops vehicles that are over the 4.6-meter height limit.
The new system was responsible for some incorrect over-height detections when it first became operational. These issues led to lane closures and traffic problems.
However, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), which operates the tunnel, says the issue has been resolved, the system is now fully operational and detections will be clearly identified if they are over the regulation height.
A TII spokesperson said this morning’s incident and one earlier this week were both examples of the system working correctly.
“The event early this week was due to a vehicle that was correctly identified as being over the regulated height and was redirected. Additionally, this morning’s event proves that the system is important,” the spokesman said.

Surely tractors are not legally allowed to do this as I thought their insurance only covered them for moving agricultural equipment from field to field and within a certain milage.
@Ian James Burgess: nope they can drive length and breath of the country with a trailer hauling anything that fits in it at 16 years of age and with no experience.

I grew up on a farm years ago,the farmers with their tractors don’t realise whether it’s on a country lane or on a main road,they travel the same way,even to this day where I live,if your behind someone in a tractor or jeep,u always keep well back,because they do be looking in over the ditches seen what’s on other people’s land,they could stop all of a sudden,or swerve..
I also don’t see a single number plate on any of the trucks or the trailer…

This is not an agricultural load, so the tractor must have commercial diesel, commercial tax, commercial insurance and be certified roadworthy. Same for the trailer including weight limits of 10ton per axel. Height limit is 4.65m as already mentioned and if the Garda is unhappy with the safety of the load, there can be prosecutions. Driver must have a full commercial licence and be over 18. Those are the rules. Most of the comments here are rubbish and disinformation.

I grew up in Ennis,my Da was a rep for Guinness, when I was about 8 I remember a day on the road back to Ennis from Kilrush ,my Da slowed down to about 5 mph,there were trucks tractors and cars behind us, I gave em the finger out the back window

4.6 metres is a very generous height limit.
The tallest double deck buses are 4.4 metres
Max authorised height for HGV’s is 4 metres.
@Nomis Andrews: incorrect. The maximum legal height is 4.65m for trucks. And truck over that height can obtain a permit to travel
@John Webb: Yeah so if your truck is 4.65m (a legal height) then you can’t travel through the tunnel – lack of foresight
