Public warned to avoid 'unsafe area' as teams search for missing couple

A multi-agency search for the Japanese couple was launched after they failed to return to their car.

THE IRISH COAST Guard has issued a warning to the public to avoid an area of coastline near Kilkee in Clare, where searches for a Japanese couple have been taking place.

A multi-agency search for the pair was launched after they failed to return to their car.

Eiji Takagi (63) and Ushio Azaki (61) checked out of their hotel in Spanish Point last Saturday morning.

Their hired car was later found parked in George’s Head car park in Kilkee, which is a popular cliff walking spot.

It is believed their car was parked there shortly after 9pm Saturday.

The tourists were due to fly from Shannon via Heathrow Airport for an onward connection to Tokyo on Monday but they failed to show up.

“Kilkee Coast Guard unit assisted by neighbouring units from Ballybunion and Doolin will carry out extensive shoreline and boat searches,” the Coast Guard said.

The Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter will also participate in the weekend searches.

“The Coast Guard are appealing to members of the public to avoid the local area from George’s Head to Chimney Bay area, where experienced searchers will be operating.

“This is an exposed and unsafe area.”

Anyone with information in relation to the whereabouts of the couple is being asked to contact Kilrush Garda Station on 065 908 0550, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
