Japanese minister resigns… because of his blood type

Japan’s reconstruction minister, Ryu Matsumoto, resigned just one week into the job, citing his blood type as the reason.

A JAPANESE MINISTER had a rather unusual reason for his swift resignation this week – his blood type.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ryu Matsumoto was the country’s reconstruction minister but tendered his resignation on Tuesday morning.

He was appointed to the role following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami which wreaked havoc on Japan.

As a way of explaining his behaviour, he said:

I’m a type B and can have the tendency to be simplistic and straightforward at times. My intentions don’t always come across perfectly.

He’s not the first person to resign in an unusual way:

I think type B refers to a personality type rather than a blood type in this instance.

The original article in the Wall Street Journal links to this piece http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2010/06/16/whats-your-sign-er-blood-type/ which says that in Japan, Type B blood types are seen as “optimistic, work at their own pace, but laissez-faire,” and that appears to be what the minister was referring to.

Which in fairness may be a confusion by those in Japan to have connection to now debunked psychological profiles type A and type B. Type B being considered more relaxed than Type A… These typologies are no longer considered robust enough to hold.

No joke – Japanese people really believe this supposed link between personality and blood type. They take it seriously enough that marriage engagements are broken off because of ‘incompatibility’.
