US VICE PRESIDENT JD Vance said he would join his wife Usha on a trip on Friday to Greenland, adding to pressure on the autonomous Danish territory that Donald Trump wants to take over.
Vance, who has become Trump’s attack dog on foreign policy matters, said he would visit US Space Force members based there but also “check out what’s going on with the security” of Greenland.
His announcement came just hours after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen criticised the US second lady’s visit as putting “unacceptable pressure” on both the territory and Denmark.
The Office of the Second Lady of the US issued a statement today announcing Thursday’s trip, saying the delegation would be visiting historical sites, learning about Greenland’s culture and attending its national dog sled race.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright will also be joining the delegation.
“It should be said clearly that our integrity and democracy must be respected without foreign interference,” Egede said, adding that this week’s visit “cannot be seen as just a private visit”.
“There was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I’m going to join her,” Vance said in a video on Tuesday.
The White House later announced that Usha Vance’s previously announced schedule – which included a visit to Greenland’s national dogsled race – had been canceled.
She would now join her husband at the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland, it said.
Since returning to power in January, Trump has insisted he wants the United States to take over Greenland for national security purposes and has refused to rule out the use of force.

In his video announcement, Vance said other countries sought to use the territory to “threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and, of course, to threaten the people of Greenland.”
Trump has also recently talked about annexing Canada, saying it should become the “51st state” of the United States.
“Speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland,” added Vance.
Both US and Danish leaders had “ignored Greenland for far too long” and that “we think we can take things in a different direction,” he added.
According to Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz will also visit Greenland this week, while US media have reported that Energy Secretary Chris Wright will travel there as well.
The dogsled race that Usha Vance had previously been due to visit has been largely sponsored by the US consulate in Nuuk, Greenlandic media reported.
The announcement of her trip on Monday angered Danish and Greenlandic politicians.
“You can’t organise a private visit with official representatives of another country,” Frederiksen told reporters.
The visit comes at a time of political flux in Greenland, where parties are still negotiating to form a new coalition government following a March 11 election.
A self-governing Danish territory which is seeking to emancipate itself from Copenhagen, Greenland holds massive untapped mineral and oil reserves, although oil and uranium exploration are banned.
It is also strategically located between North America and Europe at a time of rising US, Chinese and Russian interest in the Arctic, where sea lanes have opened up due to climate change.

Safe to assume the world will see all kinds of “mad stuff” over the next few days to divert focus from the “competent” national security team group. “Don’t look over here. Look over there instead”
@Daniel Skelton: no evidence that Vance is a sexual predator. Only to sofas and couches which are inanimate objects. Vance does have an unusual hatred for Europe and European culture.
Perhaps they should be denied entry and deported. They have spoken against Greenland and have openly threatened it. Maybe send them to ICE land to be processed.
@Clare Power: sofa so good. But let’s see what happens when he gets there. Mind you if I had a choice between reading hillbilly elegy and being ruled by Donald chump I really wouldn’t know which to choose. The book is as excruciating a piece of sh.t as nonce himself is
The very well educated Vance and co claiming Europe is freeloader considering they have assisted the free loading USA in wars which include Yemen, this looney did not read up on Ukraine, world wars, 9/11 , but he is a Maga guy belonging to the new fascism White House using North Korea rule book.
Imagine being such a wimp, you give your unfettered allegiance to a pampered queen like Trump. People who aren’t total weirdos can’t possibly understand. I really feel for that woman. She’s in a living hell.
There should be a crack down on state interference by foreign nations! If only there was a world body like the UN security council to stop this kind of activity!
@sean o’farrell: exactly. The people of Greenland need to do what happened when Vance went skiing a few weeks ago. Protests everywhere and make them as uncomfortable as possible. Or just revoke their travel visas. These yanks think they can do whatever they want with impunity. Sickening.
“The strategic partnership between the United States and Greenland has long played a vital role in our national and economic security,” Mr. Vance said in a statement. “In the decades since, neglect and inaction from Danish leaders and past U.S. administrations presented our adversaries with the opportunity to advance their priorities in Greenland and the Arctic. President Trump is rightly changing course.” Had to go to a Washington Times article to find out anything relevant to the visit.
@thomas molloy: Washington Times is a ‘newspaper’ owned by a religious cult called ‘the unification Church’ popularly known as the ‘moonies’. It is typically publishes propaganda for the Republican Party and other right wing causes
The funny thing is that the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen is just like Trump and Vance in her policies, especially on immigration. She says that immigrants “take the wages on native-born Danes” or ordered Danish authorities to strip any people seeking asylum of their money and valuables. Some of the SD Party’s positions mirror that of the AFD in that remigration rather than integration is the official policy and some members have called for immigrants with Danish citizenship to be kicked out. She’s an ardent protectionist and holds backward views on all the benefits of globalisation. I’m surprised that Trump, Vance and her haven’t gotten on better. All three of them are crass populists who ran on lofty promises. It’s interesting how no one seems to point this out.
@William Jennings: she’s prime minister because her policies are popular not populist . Populist is a bogus slur against European nationalists when they do well at the polls .
@The Rossie: do you say that because you are too lazy to research populism? A well established category whose meaning people from both right and left agree on
@Alan: Oxford Languages Dictionary – “ Populist – a person , especially a politician , who strives to appeal to ordinary people “ . What politician or party doesn’t do this ? . Labels are manufactured to influence people by all the political spectrum .
@The Rossie: Mette Frederiksen has an approval rating of 32%. The SD Party is projected to lose 14 out of 50 seats and they are only polling at 22% of the vote themselves. How did you come to the conclusion that her actions are popular? The Danish public sure as heck don’t think so! Populism is the art of lying persuasively to the public and then running for the hills when they realise that all your promises were nothing more than an illusion.
@William Jennings: her migration policy is popular in Denmark and other Euro countries are starting to sing from the same hymn sheet . Populist / popular – a rose by any other name smells as sweet .
Is Vance an A.I. prototype? He seems to have little, if any, genuine humanity. And do Fox News have to edit his wife out of footage? Or apply a Caucasian filter to her?
@thomas molloy: how state visits work is the host country invites you. So, no it’s not normal. And there was nothing unpatriotic about the actions of the journalist, quite the opposite. You’re pathetic at this stage Thomas.
