Man arrested over Jill Meagher case "expected to be charged with rape and murder"

Latest reports say the man being held is helping police to locate Ms Meagher’s body.

A MAN ARRESTED by Australian police investigating the disappearance of Irish woman Jill Meagher is expected to be charged with rape and murder, say Australian media.

ABC News reports that the man will be charged with the rape and murder of Ms Meagher, as do a number of news outlets. Victoria Police have not officially confirmed the news.

The man is 41 years old and from Coburg, a suburb near Brunswick where Meagher lived.

Hamish Fitzsimmons, of Lateline in Melbourne, said police say the man in custody is “helping them to locate Jill Meagher’s body”.

The Age says that it is believed the suspect is seen in the CCTV footage of the missing woman where she is outside a bridal boutique.

Jill Meagher was last seen leaving Bar Ettiquette in the Brunswick area of Melbourne at around 1.30am local time and was reported missing at around midday.

She had been socialising with work colleagues from ABC radio and set out alone to walk to her home which was about five minutes away.

Victoria Police are continuing to ask people with any information on the case to contact them.

Not the intended victim? So the gunman has said he/she shot the wrong person? Or is it fair to say presumptuous?

Its like living in a country with NO Police. Are they doing anything to tackle serious crime in this place?
