Dundon trial to begin as he is hospitalised following prison hunger strike

John Dundon is due before the Special Criminal Court today charged in connection with the 2008 murder of rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

THE TRIAL OF the man accused of the murder of rugby player Shane Geoghegan five years ago will get under way today as the accused, John Dundon, was yesterday hospitalised following a hunger strike.

Dundon, 29, has been on hunger strike for over a week and was hospitalised yesterday afternoon after an ambulance was called to Portlaoise Prison where he has been awaiting trial for the murder of Geoghegan in November 2008.

The Limerick man had been due to appear before the Special Criminal Court this morning and although this hearing will go ahead it is uncertain as to whether he will be in attendance.

A source told TheJournal.ie that Dundon hasn’t eaten for sometime.

Dundon had been attempting to get the case adjourned, arguing that his lawyers had not been given enough time to review documentation related to the prosecution’s case.

The High Court last week ruled that the trial could go ahead. The Irish Prison Service declined to comment.
