Whistleblower John Wilson to speak at Sinn Féin summer school

Journalist Gemma O’Doherty, Marian Kelly — a survivor of the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home, and comedian PJ Gallagher are also speaking at the event.

FORMER GARDA WHISTLEBLOWER John Wilson will attend a Sinn Féin event today.

The retired officer will discuss whistleblowing and the wider issues around it in a panel event at the party’s Summer School in Baile Bhuirne, Co. Cork.

Frank Connolly, who recently authored a book about Tom Gilmartin, and former Irish Independent reporter Gemma O’Doherty will also join the discussion.

Wilson had been planning a local election bid this year, but had to drop out after he was diagnosed with cancer.

He’s also on the replacements list for recently elected MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, meaning he could be called upon to serve in Brussels should the former TD decide at any stage not to continue with his five year term.

Journalist Anne Cadwallader, comedian PJ Gallagher and Marian Kelly — a survivor of the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home — are also speaking at the event, which began yesterday.

The party’s deputy leader, Mary Lou McDonald, will lead a discussion on the topic of women in politics this afternoon.
