IRISH COAST GUARD members were called out to Dun Laoghaire yesterday after swimmers raised concerns about jet skis and powerboats ‘causing havoc’.

Dublin Coast Guard received calls from swimmers at the Forty Foot bathing area, where people were using the yellow safety water-markers as a race course for two jet skis and two powerboats.

The yellow safety markers at Seapoint, the Forty Foot, and Killiney Beaches are to designate a safe area for swimmers to use.

Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard dispatched a team to investigate and spotted those using the jet skis and powerboats ‘acting recklessly’.

Within minutes of seeing the Irish Coast Guard, they stopped and left the area.

Following the incident, the Coast Guard reminded people of the regulations around owning and using a jet ski:

  • A lifejacket is a requirement
  • Jet skis can only be operated by someone is 16 years or older
  • You must hold a permit issued by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (for the local area)
  • Jet skis may only operate up to 10am and after 7.30pm within DLRCC area and must stay 300 meters from the foreshore expecting when launching (this is to protect swimmers)
  • Jet ski course is available to all users and is highly recommended.
