Judge awards €4m damages against Meath County Council

Awarding the money to a property company, Justice Peter Kelly said the council had exhibited ineptitude of a high order in its handling of property deal.

OVER €4M IN DAMAGES HAS been awarded to a property company against Meath County Council following the council’s handling of a property agreement.

RTÉ reports that the Commercial Court judge found that Darlington Properties Ltd had purchased a €4.5m site from the council after hearing that a new road between that site and Ashbourne town would be built.

However, the court heard that the county council had already granted planning permission to another company for a neighbouring site which meant the construction of the road was not going to happen.

Making the award, Judge Peter Kelly said the council had made error after error, and had sought to defend the indefensible.
