A JUDGE WHO said he doesn’t like presiding over assault cases involving bottles or glasses, has refused to hear a case of a woman who was allegedly glassed in the face by another woman at a nightclub.
Ciara Killeen, (31), with an address at Hyde Road, Prospect, Limerick, is accused of assault causing harm to Mary McCarthy, at Queens nightclub, Abbey Street, Ennis, Co Clare, at 1.10am on 1 November, 2015.
Ms McCarthy received 23 stitches to her face following the alleged brawl.
Inspector Tom Kennedy, Shannon garda station, said the State would allege that both women got into an argument in the smoking section of the nightclub after both women had gone out socialising on Halloween night last year.
“It will be alleged Ms Killeen struck the injured party with a glass into the face,” Insp Kennedy said.
“Both of them ended up fighting on the ground.”
“It will be alleged Mary McCarthy got a cut on or about her right eye,” the Inspector added.
On the night of 31 October Mary McCarthy went to the nightclub in Ennis with four friends on a night out.
At approximately 1am on 1 November, while in a smoking area of the nightclub, Ms McCarthy and Ms Killeen allegedly fought.
During the course of the alleged argument Ciara Killeen struck Mary McCarthy with a glass she was holding with her left hand into her face.
Both women locked together and a struggle ensued on the floor of the club, until they were separated by security.
It will also be alleged that Mary McCarthy sustained a laceration to the right side of her face, close to her right eye, where she subsequently required 23 stitches.
The incident was caught on CCTV, the State will allege.
Judge Patrick Durcan said: “I refuse jurisdiction because I don’t like hearing bottle or glass (assault) cases.”
