Australian council moves to censor mural which depicts people having sex... in a burger

The ‘Kama Sutra Burger’ mural was commissioned by a local business.

AN AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL has moved to ‘edit’ a mural by a local artist which depicts people having sex between the buns of a burger.

The ‘Kama Sutra Burger’, as it is known, was painted on a wall of a local business at the owner’s request by artist Makatron in the town of Moreland, near Melbourne.

The mural could certainly be seen to be racy, with copulating couples entwined between lettuce, cheese and ketchup.

With the burger fully realised on the wall, it wasn’t long before locals took umbrage with its context, and now the local council has elected to tone it down somewhat.

“Certainly as a councillor I’m not big on censorship and I think that all art is subjective but in this case I think the work blurs some public suitability lines on what could be considered offensive,” Moreland Mayor Meghan Hopper said in a statement, reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.

So fortunately the owner and artist have agreed it’s suitable to make some edits while keeping the mural on site.

A petition has been set up online calling for the mural to be left as it is.

For his part Makatron seems to be fairly philosophical about the censorship of his art.

He’s agreed to amend the ‘naughty’ parts of the mural and is planning to sell t-shirts showing the mural in all its original glory.
