A MAN WHO was caught carrying a bread knife in his pocket in the Co Kerry town of Kenmare has had his case adjourned.
31 year old Jason Crowley of Rock Street, Kenmare appeared before Judge John King at Tralee District Court where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of having a knife.
Garda James Hendrick told the court he arrested Mr Crowley on Tuesday afternoon around 1.45 at The Square, Kenmare. He was carrying a breadknife from his kitchen in his pocket, the handle of which was visible to the Garda.
Gardaí were alerted following a number of calls from concerned members of the public about a man going down the street with a knife.
Solicitor Padraig O’Connell said his client, who has one leg, has extreme physical and mental medical difficulties.
He said the accused had been threatened by a non-Irish national in recent times, had a grave fear for his safety, and was carrying the knife for protection.
Mr Crowley had not threatened nor injured anyone with the knife.
Judge John King adjourned the case until October 2nd at Kenmare District Court to allow time for a Probation Service report to be completed.
Mr Crowley was remanded on bail subject to conditions including a curfew and signing on at the local Garda station.
