An acid attack survivor is now fronting a major fashion campaign

A WOMAN WHO was the victim of an acid attack while a teenager is now the face of a fashion campaign by a top Indian designer.

When Lakshmi Saa was 15-years-old, she was attacked by a 32-year-old man after she rejected his marriage proposal.

Acid attacks have long plagued India, often targeting women in public places as a form of revenge.

Those who survive acid attacks often face lifelong scars and social stigma. Activists say little has changed despite steps taken last year to help wipe out the scourge and improve financial aid for survivors.

Saa has been foremost among this activism, campaigning against the unregulated sale of acid and the lack of prosecutions of the men who carry out these attacks.

Now, fashion house Viva n Diva has hired her as a brand ambassador as part of its ‘Face of Courage’ campaign.

‪”‎Lakshmi‬ is a very strong woman who has taken this step forward setting an example for all the ‪women‬ who have been stolen of one thing or the other,” the company said announcing the campaign.

For a moment you see ‎beauty‬ in a very different way and all we thought was to capture it to give it a meaning, to remove any speck of being a victim from those ‪‎eyes‬ and give them a stage,an ‪‎employment‬, a platform a medium to flaunt it with style.

Speaking to BBC News, her campaigngin is about about showing victims how important they are.

The problem is not just in being a victim but also your victimisation by the society. We are treated as if we are good for nothing and as if our lives are a waste.
