Leo Varadkar tells Willie O'Dea to "chill" over his new DJ job

Christmas handbags in Leinster House.

SOCIAL PROTECTION MINISTER and Leo Varadkar has told Fianna Fáil’s Willie O’Dea to “chill” after O’Dea took a swing at the Social Protection Minister’s upcoming cameo as an RTÉ radio presenter.

Someone at Fianna Fáil dusted off the photoshop skills with this frankly stunning interpretation of Varadkar, after it was announced that he’s been asked to fill in on a Christmas broadcast of RTÉ’s Late Date.

O’Dea said in a statement that Varadkar has “crafted a role for himself as resident chat show panellist and a sort of celebrity political commentator” but when it “comes to actual political accountability and having a vision for the department he is responsible for, he is nowhere to be seen”.

Leo’s response?

Ouch. He’s stopped just short of shouting “YOU’RE SO EMBARRASSING DAD. GOD!”.

PS. Play Born Slippy Leo, good man.

    @Barry Somers:

Maybe a strategy would be to say that the MMR was 500euro. The likelihood is that they would then complain about this and look for it to be free. The government can then submit to their demands and they will feel like they have won and will go and get the MMR.

I never had the MMR because 35+ years ago the doctors advised against it if there was asthma in the family.

At 15 I got the rubella vacation. My asthmatic husband had the measles at 20 and was hospitalized for a week. I never caught them off him at the time, but as it now stands there is always a chance I could get them.

I say there are many unvaccinated adults out there who don’t realize they are unvaccinated.

@Lily: I was allergic to eggs when I was a baby and so they didn’t give me the MMR (I’ve since developed a tolerance). I contracted the measles ages 7 or 8 and spent a week in hospital. Luckily it could have been far worse. I cannot understand a parent who would wilfully subject their child to such threats. It’s negligent parenting and worse. I’ve since gotten the MMR jab in a hospital a few years ago to protect against the risk of mumps. I’d wager there’s still plenty out there at risk of measles with zero clue that they’re not immunized.

Nothing is 100% effective. Measles is an airborne virus. Which means if you walk in somewhere where a person who has measles is or has been. There is a very very very very…. high chance of catching it if not vaccinated.
So ask yourself this do i want a 90% chance of catching measles by by just been in the same general area? Or a 99% chance of not?

I’d like to see us ban prominent anti vaxxers and rescind licenses of anyone in the medical profession who is spreading lies about vaccines.

@Louise Ní Riain: Measles almost never hits twice, mumps can on occasion. I suppose the key thing there is that even if you don’t come down with them twice remaining unvaccinated increases the chances of you spreading it to someone else.

You are correct in that you can’t get it twice but the virus can remain dormant in the body and then kick into action many years later which makes some people believe they are getting it twice

@Nick Allen: Ah ok, good to know. So it’s kind of similar to getting Shingles years after chicken pox, as it lays dormant and appears when the immune system is compromised.

My Daughter got full blown measles a year or 2 after the MMR, really scary stuff, doctor kept refusing to believe it was measles until she was covered and looking like a leopard. She also got rubella, later on. So did my younger daughter, they both got the MMR. It doesn’t work for everybody!
