SINGER LILY ALLEN has temporarily handed over control of her Twitter account after she was subjected to “the most disgusting, sexist, misogynistic, racist shit”.
The row stemmed from tweets Allen sent in which she said she replaced the words ‘immigrant’ or ‘Muslim’ with ‘pensioner’ in order to make a point about prejudice.
.@johndubskierx I don't hate all pensioners just the extremists. Can't you see this country is being taken over by hate extremist pensioners.
The tweets, interpreted by some as a bona fide attack on UK pensioners, led to a torrent of abuse culminating in some truly awful exchanges about the death of Allen’s baby son in 2010.

@Fake Avast: It’s interesting to see that a lot of the accounts mocking Allen over her miscarriage are EDL, Alt-Right accounts, such a sick and twisted bunch.
The best action is just to ignore it, it can be hard of course but putting spotlight on the trolls and especially getting them media attention just makes more people join in and the posts become worse. Either ignore them or report them (Twitter has actually gotten good with this lately, if the tweet has broken their rules the account is usually suspended within a couple of days).
No Joe,her only mistake here was thinking the people who got offended by the point she was making would have the mental capacity to see the nuance or the context of that point.
She and her I’ll have been slagging off EU leavers and those that want to control immigration for a while now, from her privileged position but she wants to be treated with kid gloves.
Just read that back to yourself Joe. Not wanting to be taunted about the death of your child = wanting to be treated with kid gloves? Even in the post Brexit/Trump world that’s a f##k#d up position to take. The lack of awareness in a lot of people is staggering.People going around calling everybody snowflakes, get so offended by somebody’s differing views that they think it’s alright to use their child’s death against them. They’re usually the people who spend all their time going on about democracy and free speech while having no idea what those things actually mean.
@DPentony: who did she abuse? How did she abuse them? When did she abuse them? Does this justify those who would abuse an emotionally vulnerable woman?
@Tony Daly I didn’t say it justified those comment about her baby though. I am saying I have seen her slurring people on Twitter, she is very fond of dishing out abuse and name calling. If she can give it but not take it, maybe she shouldn’t be on Twitter.
Deborah, every comment from you seems to have an anti-men tone to it. Plenty of men on here have expressed their disgust at the comments, why do you put all men here in the same basket? You probably have a father/brother/son/nephew. Do you treat them all with the same disdain?
@Deborah Behan: Free speech outweighs all other concerns. Lots of things are said people dislike, but that’s the price of free speech. I’ll give you an example: I think you’re a whiny pain in the hole.
Lilly Allen does have a problem with pensioners. To defend her position which is basically indefensible she brings up in graphic terms her deceased child. This was low, a low only matched and then exceeded by the Twitter trolls who took her introduction of the subject as a signal that the subject was fair game.
In other news that won’t be reported on thejournal, Lilly Allen was attempting to DOX a twitter user by passing out her photo and asking people to identify the user. Shameful carry on.
Just a bunch of cowardly, lonely weak men hurling abuse on twitter hiding behind fake accounts. They should ban fake troll accounts. At least have the balls to stand over what you say.
I mean grown men that hide behind fake names and pictures. Then scream about lefty snowflakes! Yet they won’t
Show their faces? Tragic! Sad! Huge
Problem!
I don’t think showing your face is an issue, but being transparent in who you are is where you draw the line on issues where ypu should be taken seriously or not. People trying to claim anonymity so they can abuse others is an abuse of the notion of ideas over the person. Trolls should be ignored regardless of their anonymity.
Poor woman. Easy for ordinary people on the street to ignore. But the abuse celebrities get is potentially infinitesimally greater. Even tough she probably knew the individual was a troll, it still brings up feelings that are in the instances extremely painful.
Things escalate quickly on Twitter. On all social media actually. Youtube is an absolute cesspit. People actually watch murder and vicious assaults on Youtube.
The real problem here is the abnegation of responsibility by social media sites themselves regards ethical standards.
Twitter storms are huge revenue generators.
Profit before people.
Well said Jason….lily is a prolific Twitter megaphone mouthpiece who is well adept at using this platform to voice her opinions and to pillory those who have a differing opinion to hers by name calling and and finger pointing with these morally charged, virtue signalling buzzwords ………she knew the exact reaction that she would get when she mentioned her misfortunate miscarriage on such a platform and makes a meal of it when someone throws a few nasty remarks…running to her safespace while contriving a media circus around it , all part of a bigger picture to craic down on free speech. Sorry for your loss lily….but please….please…..please……just F*#k off for good this time
I don’t understand why anyone in the public eye with subject themselves to Twitter. It’s a freak show and until everyone is obliged to prove and register a real identity it will remain so.
Often they have to use social media, it depends on your career. I was at a great talk by various writers. One wasn’t keen on any social media at all, and the last thing she wanted was to spend her time on a blog and have to deal with all the snide comments. But her publisher was urging them all to take part – like book signings, they won’t sell many books unless they get out there. So she opted for Twitter in the end for brevity, because it’s limited to 140 characters.
Social media can be used for good, for bad, for the inane and as a platform for malice.
Twitter has a particular propensity for mobbing and trolling abuse of persons who are emotionally vulnerable. Mercy and understanding are lacking on Twitter.
Shes dreadfully misinformed and apologises regularly on behalf of all Brits re migrants. which is not her place..but thats vile. These folks dont seem to have moral compasses.
Awful people doing awful things is not newsworthy. It is expected. Not a defence of these comments before the braindead dummies on this website descend claiming as such.
