Arrest made over killing of man in Limerick

53-year-old Gerard Freyne died at Cork University Hospital yesterday morning, two days after he was assaulted.

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING THE killing of a man in his 50s who died after an attack in Limerick this week have made an arrest.

Gerard Freyne, a 53-year old father, who was from Limerick, died in the Intensive Care Unit at Cork University Hospital yesterday morning, two days after he was assaulted.

A man in his 30s was detained this morning.

Speaking ahead of today’s developments, Inspector Ronan McDonagh, who is leading the murder probe, said gardaí did not believe a weapon was used. However they believe the victim, who was living in sheltered accommodation, was assaulted prior to his death.

The attack took place on Lord Edward Street at around 7.45pm on Wednesday, McDonagh said.

A number of witnesses saw a man aged in his 20s or 30s leave the scene around the time of the assault, the senior garda added.

According to a statement, Gardaí arrested a 32-year-old man in Limerick in connection with the death of Gerald Freyne earlier today.

He’s being detained at Roxboro Road Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
