Open thread: What's the one thing you do to make yourself feel better?

Little things can make a big difference.

JUST AS WE have to look after our physical health by exercising and eating well, we also need to look after our mental health.

If you’re not feeling well, this can seem hard to do. However, it has been found that doing little things to make yourself feel better can have a big impact on how you feel in that moment and your mental health overall.

We asked some of the staff at Journal Media to share the little things they do to make themselves feel better when they’re feeling low. Let us know your own tips for feeling better in the comments below.

Get out there… even if you don’t feel like it

My advice would be to be to say yes to meeting a friend/etc when your gut instinct is to say no because you’re not feeling great. Sometimes the easiest thing when you’re feeling low is to shut yourself off from your friends because you don’t want to “bother them” with your problems or bring them down. But it’s good to go against your gut.

Spend some time in nature

Going for a walk… or just do things out of the house. While it’s hard to do (at the time) I don’t think anyone ever regrets going for a walk.

Have some ‘me-time’

If I’m feeling low, I tend to do lots of small ‘minding myself’ things like I’ll do a face mask or cook myself a nice meal. It’s important to recognise when you need to mind yourself.

Get a good night’s sleep

Putting on fresh sheets and having an early night is another one.
