Army called to Cavan school over unstable chemical

The bomb disposal team was deployed to Loreto College in Cavan Town.

AN ARMY BOMB disposal team made safe an unstable chemical at a school in Cavan Town this evening.

The unit was deployed following a request from Gardaí after a quantity of unstable Dinitrophenylhydrazine was discovered during a routine audit in a Loreto College laboratory.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team arrived on the scene at 5pm and it was declared a safe area by 6pm. The chemical was removed and made safe through a controlled explosion at a different location.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical re-agent routinely used in laboratories around the country but it can become unstable over time.

A Defence Force EOD Team completed a similar task yesterday morning in a school in Carrigaline, Cork.
