Gardaí discover 'elaborate' cannabis growhouse at the house where man died in explosion

The explosion was not linked to the growhouse.

GARDAÍ HAVE DISCOVERED cannabis worth €150,000 at the rear of a house where a man died in an explosion.

A 28-year-old man died in the explosion in the house near Termonfeckin around midnight. A man in his 50s and a woman in her 20s were injured in the explosion.

They were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The man is suffering from significant leg, abdominal and facial injuries. The woman’s injuries are described as minor.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.

Following a search of the house, around 200 mature cannabis plants were found at the rear of the house at The Cottages, Beaulieu.

Superintendent Andrew Watters of Drogheda Garda Station says, however, told reporters including from LMFM, that the find is not linked to the explosion.

“As part of a cursory search of the grounds, gardaí searched an industrial unit at the rear of the premises, where they found an elaborate, very professional cannabis cultivation plant.

“It had a number of rooms with up to 200 mature cannabis plants, at different stages of growth.

“The plants had an estimated street value of €150,000.”

Watters commended emergency services for their response to the incident and said that a full investigation is underway. However, he said he could not confirm the exact cause of the explosion. All three people involved are Lithuanian, he said. The deceased man is the husband of the injured woman.

He appealed for anyone with any information to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041-987 4200.
