Love Parade death toll rises

Twentieth person dies from injuries sustained at German festival.

THE DEATH TOLL from Saturday’s stampede at a German music festival has risen to 20. A 21-year-old German woman died today in hospital from her injuries.

Twelve of the victims were German. The other eight came from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, China, Bosnia and Spain. The festival was created in 1989 as a demonstration for peace through love and music.

Over 500 people are believed to have been injured during the stampede at the Love Parade in Duisburg, Germany. Survivors said that the site was too small for the huge crowds which annually show up to the festival.

The exact circumstances which caused the stampede are not clear. Police investigating the deaths have seized files from the organisers and are examining the security plans for the event.

Spiegel Online says it has documents which show that the site was only approved for 250,000 – just a fraction of the 1.4 million that were reported to have turned out.

The organiser, who could face charges of negligent homicide, has said that there will be no more  Love Parade festivals as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.
