Luas red line service may remain disrupted until Sunday

Ongoing works to demolish a building damaged by fire on St Patrick’s Day will mean curtailed services into the weekend.

SERVICES ON the Luas’s red line may remain curtailed until Sunday afternoon due to a fire in the north inner city on St Patrick’s Day.

Tram services in the city centre have been hampered since the fire, when a derelict property at the corner of Queen St and Benburb St sustained significant damage in a fire.

The events meant that the overhead power lines used to power the trams have been turned off, in order to facilitate the safe demolition of the damaged building, which is directly adjacent to the line.

In an update this morning the Luas operator Veolia said the City Council was continuing work on the building, which had become structurally unsafe since the fire last weekend.

“The Council say it will take a few days more to make the area safe,” the statement said, and “therefore a normal Luas service will not resume today, Friday March 23rd, or Saturday March 24th”.

“Indeed, it may be Sunday afternoon, March 25th 2012, before a normal service resumes,” it added, saying a further update would be provided tomorrow afternoon when Dublin City Council offered further indications of their progress.

The disruption means there are no services running between Heuston and the city centre, with services only running from Heuston outbound to Tallaght and Saggart.

This is because the overhead power lines have been turned off at the Museum, Smithfield and Four Courts stops.

Sorry to see the Museum Rest pub was so damaged that it, too, has to be pulled down.

Has it been confirmed that the Musem Rest pub needs be demolished too? The report above mentions a damaged “building” so hopefully not…

Why American date format is being used in here? March 25th? I thought it was the 25th of March.
