M50 crash: Two motorcyclists in their 50s and 60s killed in collision with truck

The northbound route was closed for several hours as emergency services responded.

LAST UPDATE | 3 Jun 2022

TWO MEN – AGED in their 50s and 60s – were killed in a crash on the M50 this afternoon that led to the northbound route of the motorway being closed for several hours.

Their motorcycles collided with a truck just before 2pm. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Gardaí confirmed in a statement tonight that the road had now reopened fully and that forensic tests at the scene had concluded.

They also appealed for any witnesses or anyone with footage – including dash-cam footage – of the crash or the period leading up to it to provide it to investigators.

Officers earlier appealed to people not to share graphic images of the fatal crash.

“An Garda Síochána is aware of graphic images of this collision which are being shared across social media and messaging applications and is appealing to the public not to share this material as it is disrespectful to the deceased and their family and friends,” the statement tonight reiterated.

The crash, which happened between the Ballymount and Palmerstown junctions, caused gridlock in the west of the city this afternoon and road users were urged to avoid the area throughout the evening.

In a tweet tonight Dublin Fire Brigade, which also attended the scene, said it echoed the call from gardaí for people not to share the graphic images.

Firefighters and paramedics who had attended the crash had all been offered Critical Incident Stress Management support, it added.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lucan Garda Station on 01 666 7300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
