The northbound lane at Ballinteer. Dublin City Council

M50 "like a car park" after crash

One person said that they were in the same spot for an hour.

A MULTI-VEHICLE collision on the M50 has caused major delays on the motorway.

The five-vehicle collision happened just over an hour ago between Firhouse and Tallaght on the northbound side of the road.

All lanes were blocked, but have since reopened, as people head home for the bank holiday weekend.

No injuries have yet been reported, but the tailback stretches from junction 12 Firhouse to junction 16 Cherrywood and is having knock-on delays entering the motorway at those junctions.

Dublin Fire Brigade is urging motorists to be patient and they will get through.

Its simple folks…… a fair whack of the delays & slowing down is caused by one simple phenomena. People just dont know how to enter a motorway at speed nor do those who are on know how to let them on……Solve that & things will be better.

Simply put, many people don’t know how to drive on a three lane road. Stay left. Left lane is for driving in. Middle and right are over taking lanes. So many people driving at 80 in the centre lane with idiots undertaking. Drive slower in the left lane. Not in the middle.

If the traffic on the right is moving at a slower pace than the traffic in the left lane, you can undertake them.

At least that’s what the rules of the road stated when I last read them.

Also ones interpretation of that is taken into account, is it only when traffic is gridlocked/heavy or when some di(kwad is middle lane hogging.

It is however illegal to sit on either the middle or outside overtaking lane on our motorways

Simple — get in out of the fooking lane if someone is behind you and wants to overtake.
The overtaking lane has no meaning on the m50 because some gob$hites just doddle along in it and others feel they are driving at the speed limit so they have a duty to make sure no one else can drive any faster

There is no splitting of legal hairs. It either is or is not legal, and is also written in plain English in the Introduction to the rules of the road. If people made an effort to read this instead of coming out with this plague of rubbish and myths our roads would be much safer. The driver who undertakes is not the dangerous one. It’s the idiot who may change lane without checking their mirrors, which is an offence, under careless driving. If undertaking is so dangerous wouldn’t it be equally as dangerous overtaking a lefthand driven vehicle? If you want to pass a hogger who is in lane 3 of a 4 lane motorway how can you say it is safer to make 6 lane changes plus an overtake than simply not break any rule and simply pass on inside? The only time you could be charged for undertaking is if it’s carried out dangerously by weaving in and out of lanes.

Even if the traffic corps were at every exit and ramp it would not improve. If you even attempt to keep in lane and drive within limits you will be cut up,tailgated, undertaken . Avoid when at all possible because that road is reserved for a special kind of ignoramus.

M50 is over the design capacity, the speed limit is entirely notional and rarely if ever enforced…

Drive in lane one only to be barged out of it by drivers who don’t know how to merge onto a motorway
Drive in lane two only to be barged out of it by merging drivers, and cut up by drivers from lane 3 speeding and cutting you up so they can cut into the next off-ramp..
Drive in lane three at 100kph? Expect to have an Audi/BMW/Merc SUV sitting on your bumper, leave a proper 3 or 4 second gap to the car infront? Well expect to have a car/van cut into that gap causing you to brake…

m50 southbound is a car park every morning Mon- Fri I think it’s just as bad now as it was before the toll booths were removed and the bridge widened. I don’t think it would be a bad idea to reconsider building an outer ring road north of the airport linking up with the n3 n4 and n7. if it gets any worse I think people will do the same as 10 years ago and start cutting through the city centre believing it to be just as quick and cheaper. by the way, sorry for the rant, hopefully nobody was injured.

No chance of it being quicker with the same street bus gate in place

There are plenty of other routes through the city, you know. The bus fare hasn’t made any major difference; it’s the Luas works that are making it difficult to cross parts of the city.

Not related to the accident but more to the M50 in general…
Its such a shame that there’s no foresight in this country. Dublin needed an inner ring road decades ago. The north and south circulars should have been widened years ago with an outer ring road beyond that. The M50 is a single motorway that’s doing the job of three ring roads

Middle-lane hoggers and cat drivers on the M50 should be forcibly deported to the west, Cromwell style. 3 evenings out of 5 it’s nightmarishly slow.

What do people expect ? absolutely zero enforcement of rules of the road on M50
Blinded by fog lights in a clear night? tailgating? Not leaving a sufficient gap? Not indicating in good time? Sweeping from outside lane to exit in one go ? And not a guard in sight!
